'Borders' Experimental Video and Short Film Curated Showreel VCAS - Vienna Contemporary Art Space (a small artist run organisation based in Vienna) is pleased to announce our Open Call to submit work for inclusion in 'Borders' an experimental video and short film showreel dedicated to exploring the nature of borders and their impact on society, culture, and the human experience. This curation aims to bring together the work of visual artists working in video as well as filmmakers, and encourages experimental formats, exploring innovative approaches to visual expression and/or storytelling.

Concept & Theme:

Background: Borders have long been a focal point of human interaction, shaping the course of history and influencing the distribution of culture.

From geopolitical boundaries to the borders that delineate social constructs, these lines of demarcation often act as both barriers and bridges, separating and connecting individuals and communities.

The digital sphere has also impacted our understanding of borders, as they shift and blur by a different set of rules.

Objective:

This showreel seeks to explore the interplay between borders and artistic expression, inviting artists and filmmakers to challenge preconceived notions of identity, belonging, and exclusion.

We encourage submissions that push the boundaries of conventional filmmaking, embracing experimentation and innovation as tools for exploring the many meanings of borders.

Selected videos and short films will be included in the VCAS showreel to be shown to the public on Thursday, July 4th, 2024, as a part of the Networking European Civic Education (NECE) Art as a Bridge: fostering civic education on borders lab at WEST space in Vienna’s 9th district.

After the screening, there will be a panel discussion in which all artists and filmmakers who work in the showreel will be invited to participate.

*Unfortunately, there is no artist fee for work being shown in this screening.
