Helen Mather Greater Manchester, United Kingdom
  Back to profiles

Helen Mather is a Manchester based artist, technician and workshop facilitator. Her art practice explores the language of materials, how materials can speak to things that verbal language cannot, and the tacit knowledge gained from worked with materials.

Currently exploring the use of materials in interpreting pain, Helen has recently finished her MA in Textile Practice at Manchester School of Art, developing temporary sculptural installations and a collection of handling objects for workshops. This work explores art as therapy, as care, as activism.

In collaboration with artist Anna FC Smith, Helen and Anna develop socially engaged projects together using social and political histories as a lens through which to explore and reflect contemporary lives. They are interested in methods of co-creating and collaboration with wider communities, through making and discussion.

Helen is the lead artist on the monthly textile workshop, Fabric of Protest at Peoples History Museum, Manchester.
