Heather Burton East Yorkshire, United Kingdom
I am a Yorkshire based artist specialising in palette knife painting. I produce landscape, figurative and still life paintings using acrylics, often on large scale canvases. My work is represented by several northern galleries in Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and the Lake District, and via solo and mixed exhibitions across the north. I run workshops from home and for art groups and work to commission.
There’s something very spontaneous and exhilarating about working with a knife and I’m always discovering new techniques and finishes. I mainly use acrylics because I really enjoy layering and manipulating them to create depth, vibrancy and texture to the work. Most of my paintings, whether landscape or figurative, are inspired by mood and atmosphere. Whether it's a brief moment of dramatic light, a particular expression on someone's face or a dynamic pose, I use those fragments of observation to build and create a painting which will hopefully strike a chord in those who see it. Although my practices are based on strong drawing principles, I rarely start a painting with a drawing - I prefer to keep my work loose and open from the outset, leaving space for the paint to find its own voice as the picture gradually develops.
