Josie Purcell Cornwall and Isles of Scilly, United Kingdom
I am an eco-conscious photographic artist based in Cornwall, UK, taking inspiration for my work from my coastal and rural surroundings. I predominantly employ nature-based photographic processes and/or digital techniques to create images that spark conversation about our diverse environments and our impact on them. I am always keen to collaborate.
In my practice, I aim to use photographic processes with the least environmental impact, helping me to reduce my own photographic footprint. I am fascinated by how people respond to images depicting environmental issues, and whether abstract photographic art has the power to invoke action in relation to environmental challenges such as climate change, water scarcity, and sand mining. Many of the images I create are made with camera-less processes in collaboration with nature. In 2012, I founded Cornwall's participatory, eco-darkroom, ShutterPod, and, in 2021, I began the Photopocene podcast to share the conversations I have with fellow photographers about their eco-conscious photographic practices. I have exhibited internationally, and I am currently a PhD student with Falmouth University's Environmental Futures programme, researching eco-photography as a mediator between rivers and human health. In 2024, I am curating The Water of Sulis & Beyond show as a part of the Fringe Arts Bath festival, with a call out available via Curator Space.
