Nick Malone United Kingdom
Nick Malone crosses art forms to create mysteries and stories through paintings, drawings, artist’s books and podcasts. Initially a writer, he abandoned his former life to become a full-time artist. His work has been exhibited across the world, from Tokyo to the United States, including at the Royal Academy and the Carrousel du Louvre. He has won various national awards.
Nick Malone is a contemporary British artist who creates adventures with paintings, books and drawings. His work evolved from a hybrid abstraction to cross art forms with images and text, exploring issues of identity, transformation and change. Working mainly with drawing, painting and collage, he combines new and traditional techniques to interact in unforeseen ways, creating an art full of dynamic contrasts.
Nick was initially a writer and supported himself with an academic career. During this period he was Visiting Professor at Thessaloniki University in Greece and Wisconsin University in America, and these experiences, combined with his travels across Russia, provided material that would later figure in the adventures of his later work. His first book, The Burial of Crispin Pyke, had an introduction by William Empson, some of whose ideas in Seven Types of Ambiguity he subsequently transferred into painting and drawing. He then abandoned this former life to become a full-time artist. His art practice has evolved over time, from cruciform landscapes developed from the figure to chance interactions with layers and glazes; his more recent work uses collage, text and images for an iconography of inner fable, geography and dream. He is currently developing artwork which in part interacts with the text of his graphic novel, The Disappearance of Makepeace - A Tale of Two Lives, part of which was a prizewinner in the National Poetry, and a section of which has already been published with financial help from Arts Council England.
