  Back to profiles

I am a glass and mixed media artist based in Holmfirth, West Yorkshire. My work draws inspiration from individual and collective stories and memories. I believe that art has the power to transcend boundaries, to evoke emotions, and to ignite conversations. Alongside my own practice I run arts for wellbeing workshops in the community.

Alex Blakey is a Mixed media and glass artist based in Meltham, Holmfirth.

Alex's practice is informed by memory, people and place. She focuses on the human connection to both place and each other considering issues such as memory, connectivity, history and the human mind. Her work draws inspiration from individual and collective stories and memories. Throughout her practice Alex has always enjoyed exploring the derelict and forgotten. She has had a passion for architecture and nature and the way the two intertwine. She has always found beauty in the overlooked and discarded and it is through this passion that she began her mixed media journey. Her work takes many forms from gallery work to public art. Much of her public art work is site specific and references aspects of local heritage and culture. She take a collaborative approach to much of her practice choosing to work closely with local communities and individuals in the development of a piece.

Alex is passionate about working with people and the importance of art in well being and society as a whole. She regularly works with local community groups developing projects that aid both well-being and connectivity. She has worked on a number of different arts and health and inter-generational projects encouraging discussion and co production of new work. She is also passionate about the role art can play in connecting people to places.

Alex exhibits her work in private galleries throughout the UK as well as at larger shows and events.
