    My name is Gemma Yates and I'm a painter from the UK. I love to paint natural forms such as flowers, trees, figures and thriving landscapes.     I am a graduate professional artist with BA Fine Art First Class Honours 2006. I'm inspired by the landscape and create work that abstracts what I see and experience. Often working en plein air I create dynamic & colourful compositions. I'm inspired by abstract expressionism with rapid expressive mark making & striking colours of Fauvism.     Working with salvaged ecclesiastical glass, I use historical fragments to construct new paradigms of image‑making. Informed by early Renaissance craft, my practice reconfigures light, fracture and inherited forms for contemporary meaning.

    Shapes jump out at me. Encouraged by my own stereo blindness, shapes that could be seen as a face or body, merge and spring from anywhere. In nature, in the studio or reading a magazine, these pareidolic face experiences influence my collages, photographs and paintings. They explore the flatness of my perception and the depth of what seems to be reality.

    I am a textile artist using machine embroidery as my main medium. I work in my studio in Sheffield called 'Stitched Up and Fleeced'. I trained at Bolton Art College Foundation Course 1971-2 , Loughborough College of Art and Design Degree in Stitched Textiles 1975, PGCE Art and Design at Leicester 1976, Member of the Society of Designer Craftsmen since 1996 and awarded a Fellowship in 2013.

    I'm a 53 year old Artist from Yorkshire, i Love to paint what is in my head. I do occasionally like to paint a portrait, usually a personality from a band. Initially working as a landscape architect for 40 years till 2015 I decided to change direction to pursue my passion for b+w fine-art landscape photography using both 35mm and medium formats.     I constantly take photos and use them as source material to make videos and animations and prints and paint. I often see beauty in junk and the forgotten and the in-between. Play and humour and collaboration are important in my work as in my life. I am a quiet environmentalist and try to do my bit for the planet. 
I live with my son, my partner, sometimes his daughter and our dog in London.
