Miriam Habibe is a Welsh based artist, from a BAME South Asian heritage. After decades of spending time being a parent and working full time, in her later years she is returning to her roots and passion in artistic expressions. Miriam's artistic journey is a vivid tapestry woven with threads of struggle, resilience, and profound self-discovery. Having faced the dual challenge of embracing her BAME heritage while navigating the complexities of a society that often-marginalised voices like hers. Yet, it was this very struggle that became her catalyst for rebirth. She began to delve deeper into her roots, exploring traditional crafts such as weaving which she found a natural affinity with to more conceptual art through abstraction and mixed media techniques. Miriam puts this life experience into her art and creates with a unique authenticity that comes from diverse experiences. This is reflected in her style which is to push the boundaries of the medium. She uses the Japanese SAORI weaving technique and its philosophy of weaving emphasises true self-expression by tapping into inner personal creativity and sensibilities. Having practised a form of Japanese Buddhism for over two and half decades, the Saori loom resonates well with her. Materials used include different fibres, canvas, organic materials and painted glass. Miriam’s art is created in the flow with different materials some found on beaches and paths; where the inner world connects to the outer environment to manifest as the perfect mirror. Miriam gained a 2.1 hons in Time Based Media/ Fine Art at Preston Polytechnic in 1988.
