Fine art photographer exploring moods and emotions via experimental lighting, textures and forests. Her series GRIEF won the ‘Still Life’ category in the 15th edition of the Julia Margaret Cameron Award for Women Photographers, 2020.
Grete Hjorth-Johansen is a London based Norwegian photographer, working on both commissioned and fine art projects. Her artistic background stretches from mural painting to graphic design and later VJing for the biggest names and venues in dance music. She has previously taught photography and darkroom techniques at Southampton Institute (Southampton Solent University), Brockenhurst College and Eastleigh College.
Fine Art Practice: Bridging the gap between photographic and painterly aesthetics, Hjorth-Johansen uses a vibrant colour palette to explore and describe the moods, emotions and atmospheres that she experiences in her daily life. Love, grief, melancholy and anger are all recurring themes. Rather than documenting a certain defined reality as seen by anyone, she aims to let her inner world spill its colours onto the surfaces of the simplest shapes, the mundane, the familiar. Her approach is to forge an intimate connection with her chosen subject matter, and in doing so revealing something previously hidden or overlooked.
