Hayley Mills-Styles North Yorkshire, United Kingdom
I'm a Yorkshire based textile artist using fabric and thread to tell stories through socially engaged projects.
I’m a Yorkshire based textile artist specialising in embroidery. I work in my home studio by the sea in Scarborough. Using fabric and thread, I create textile drawings and objects that tell stories. These stories often have an autobiographical theme, exploring mental health and personal memories.
I work with a range of traditional textile techniques like hand embroidery, appliqué and English Patchwork, combining them with the digitally embroidered drawings using my Pfaff Creative 3.0 sewing and embroidery machine. My work has been exhibited in museums and heritage sites throughout the north including Whitby Museum, Sunny Bank Mills and the Thackray Museum of Medicine.
Alongside my studio practice I offer a range of textile workshops, sharing my knowledge and skills in embroidery. Community workshops are a key part of my practice, sharing these skills with groups across Yorkshire and helping people to find their creative voice. I’ve worked with creative organisations including Leeds Playhouse, Chrysalis Arts and The Yorkshire Sculpture Park.
I have been a member of the Society for Embroidered Work since 2018 and a member of Prism Textiles since 2020, becoming chair for the group in 2023.
