I am a textile artist who uses knit, print and stitch to respond to social and political landscapes
I have just completed my FdA in Textile Practice at Bradford School of Art, having studied stich, weave print and dye techniques, but specialising in knit for my final project. As an artist, I've always found solace in knitting, having first learned at primary school when I ran out of maths books. Knitting is something I have always returned to when life gets stressful. I find the rhythm of the process calming. Recently I have needed this familiarity more and more, as I left a demanding career in education after 27 years My recent project has focussed on using sybolism from trade union banner culture, musical references and my scientific back ground to process the loss of a successful career due to toxic work place bullying. I am particularly inspired by talented yarn artists such as Lisa Anne Auerbach, Kendall Ross and Kandy Diamond as well as other artists that use their work to make social or political statements.
