Jenny Seabrook Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom
I am a Cambridge-based artist, and have recently graduated from Cambridge School of Art (at ARU) with a Master's Degree in Fine Art. Working in painting and sculpture, I am inspired by natural and found-objects and often incorporate these into my work.
I am interested in how objects are experienced in the world, and the interplay between the natural and unnatural, manmade or ‘uncanny’. Inspired by natural forms, ephemera and found-objects, my practice often involves a bringing-together of these things to highlight the beauty and diversity of the world around us – The curious and the wonderful.
I challenge perceptions and like to bring out an object’s unique qualities, showing how something that could be viewed as unsettling can actually be very beautiful. Nostalgia and personal memories are important themes for me that run through much of my work and play a huge role in why I collect and create. My work has a strong curatorial element and I often incorporate things that I have collected and held onto for years. I enjoy bringing artefacts from the outside world into the domestic space.
Recent larger and more sculptural work has occupied more physical space and connects with the body. It has become more theatrical with a sense of immersion and installation – and hopefully of connectivity to the viewer. There is a playfulness and humour to my work. It is often surreal and abstract. I work in an instinctive and exploratory way that I find hard to define, preferring the viewer to provide their own interpretation.
