Kas Williams Hampshire, United Kingdom
I am a mixed media artist living on the south coast of England. I create sophisticated contemporary artworks from interesting collaborations of materials and methods. I have a Masters Distinction in Textiles and exhibit both in the UK and Internationally.
My work is defined by the layering of shades, tones and transparencies to create complex surfaces that are both tactile and visually engaging. I’m fascinated by the way materials work together and I use a fusion of diverse processes and techniques to create sophisticated contemporary artworks. The act of making a piece always generates diversions and discoveries. It’s a kind of restless exploration and I’m always looking to find a balance between complexity and elegance so it’s often in the editing and taking away of elements that the final piece comes into view.
Painting will always be the foundation of my work and colour plays a pivotal role. Its lyrical energy has always drawn me in and I use vibrant colour, texture and pattern to bring a sense of playfulness and depth to my compositions. I work intuitively in an abstract way using a mix of methods and tools with intriguing results. From these first steps I can choose to follow any number of directions to create sophisticated outcomes.
Making a piece of work is an organic process: a subconscious gathering of observations, inspirations and responses to combinations of materials, marks and patterns that I find in the world around me. The textures of nature, the interplay of light and form or the structures and patterns I encounter accumulate over time and a new piece comes from a slow assimilation of these things into layers of ideas and images until it feels ready to materialise into something more concrete.
Learning the craft of printing in a traditional way has deeply influenced my approach. It taught me process, chemistry and the science of colour. It also finely tuned the way of thinking in layers that has always come naturally to me so embracing digital technology in some parts of my work has been a natural progression that has enhanced my skills and allows me to innovate and make pieces that couldn’t be made any other way.
