Lisa Sopekan Durham, United Kingdom
I am a visual artist working within the expanded field of painting, sculpture, installation and textiles. My practice is exploratory and process driven. My work investigates the link between creativity, and health and wellbeing.
Working in the expanded field of painting, my practice is exploratory and process orientated, questioning which is more meaningful… the physical act of making or the outcome? Recently the meditative actions of wrapping, binding, hooking and knotting have become an integral part of my work as I investigate the link between the hands, brain and wellbeing. Using these rhythmic and repetitive methods fosters an intimate relationship with my materials, allowing for complete immersion in the process. I consider how to inhabit a space with form and colour, creating soft and tactile environments. I play with scale and detail and leave elements of work that could be perceived to be unfinished. My work isn’t permanent, it evolves and changes over time.
I am passionate about art in the context of health and wellbeing, both for the maker and the observer. For the viewer I want to create an environment that gives a playful sense of escapism, that encourages them to switch off from everyday life. I use processes and methods that have the same purpose for myself as the creator.
