As a printmaker and illustrator I want to create powerful and poetic art that can become a springboard for the viewers' imagination. Despite appearances, the images are grounded in reality, often beginning as drawings made from life. My art frequently combines concerns about what is happening on the world stage with a spiritual awareness. It is a kind of visionary diary.
I have always enjoyed stories, particularly epic, symbolic dramas that humble us. If the work in some way communicates that sense of awe with a tenacious grit, then I'm grateful. The frequent psychological ambiguity reflects a preference for questions over resolutions.
I have focused on the drypoint technique of etching for its visceral, tactile quality. I enjoy the sheer graft and resistance of the metal tool cutting into aluminium, which allows a delay between thought and action. It's a perfect medium for creating the kind of craggy, spiny textures essential to these often haunting but earthy prints.
