Neil Robinson Cornwall and Isles of Scilly, United Kingdom
Surfer, artist and teacher who wades with his work through dark tides and folding waves. Living in the coastal landscape, I am interested in critiquing contemporary coastal politics, and the ways in which coastal cultures are perceived by outsiders, and through this, extends into politics more widely.
Though my work may grow from commercial forms, like placid seascapes or the pretty kinds of pots you see in a tacky beachside gallery, my very physical interventions subvert the hierarchy of tourist and place. My work may provoke or confront the viewer, but its friendly, conversational approach allows unique space for a point of shared understanding to be reached between artist, viewer and oceanic environment. Although mainly using clay, I work in a wide range of materials including, but not limited to; digital, print-making, construction, and painting. Writing has a crucial part within my practice, use of shorter, prose type pieces are often applied, in various ways, onto my forms, and longer narrative essays become work within and of themselves.
