Jenny Baines is an artist whose practice explores the relationship between the body, screen and space. Working predominantly with 16mm film, she performs repeated often absurd actions for the camera, pushing the limitations of her own physical endurance.

Working predominantly with 16mm film, I perform repeated often absurd actions for the camera, pushing the limitations of my own physical endurance. In performing in public locations, the actions are statements of intent and a reclamation of space. I draw on performative methods from fine art, film and dance, using my body as material. The resulting ‘action films’ and photographs take the form of installations, screenings and performances often in combination with sculptural elements, that are exhibited in galleries and screenings internationally.

I studied at The Slade School of Fine Art and completed my practice-led PhD at Manchester School of Art. Presentations of my work include: Film Talks Touring Programme, Canada and US; New Arrangements, PINK Manchester; Prisme #6, Nantes; Celluloid Now, Chicago; London Open House Festival; Mono No Aware, New York; Kunstraum Bethanien, Berlin; Contact Festival of Experimental Film and Video, London; Urban Screens, Bergen; 10th International Istanbul Biennial.
