Jonathan Moss North Yorkshire, United Kingdom
Jonathan Moss is a visual artist working in paint, print and video. His work, while abstract, is rooted in the seen world, exploring identity and hidden histories. His current work is a form self-portraiture through a study of his own blood cells.
My practice explores the connections between micro and macro perspectives of nature. The initial stage of my creative process begins with video, which serves as inspiration for my paintings, prints and installations. While seemingly abstract, my work is always grounded in the 'seen' world. However, I aim for it to transcend its original context, creating a space in which one can lose oneself. I am particularly drawn to hidden histories.
My current project explores my own cells as a form of self-portraiture addressing identity and neurodiversity. Pattern and repetition play a significant role in my work, reflecting an intrinsic part of who I am. For me, chaos can be transformed into order - an act of restructuring my own internal landscape.
I studied Printmaking at the Royal College of Art, Education at Oxford University and hold both a Master’s and a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Art and Art History from the University of Wales.
Some notable projects include 'Gene Expression' (Wellcome Trust-funded), 'Path' (British Council exhibition in St Petersburg, Russia) and 'Are There Any People Here?' a video and photographic exploration of the Holocaust in southern France (Arnolfini Gallery, Bristol and Oxford University).
