Pamela Schilderman Warwickshire, United Kingdom
My mixed-media practice is influenced by science and often draws inspiration from my Dutch/Brazilian heritage. It aims to encourage the viewer to question knowledge and value systems by teasing their cognitive senses. Since graduating from Goldsmiths in 2004 I have exhibited in galleries, museums and alternative venues across the UK and done residencies in France, Holland and Finland.
My practice is strongly influenced by science and explores notions of identity and individuality through repetition, often juxtaposing microcosm and macrocosm as if with the lens of a microscope.
When reshaping or expanding the boundaries of sculpture, drawing and painting I challenge preconceptions through definition and choice of media, the visual overwhelms analysis, the ‘how’ or ‘why’ relegated.
I am attracted by the everyday made beautiful; all about perception, my art provokes uncertainty in the viewer, it teases their cognitive senses by blurring the distinction between what they know and what they see.
