Carolyn Curtis Magri West Yorkshire, United Kingdom
I am a UK based artist with many years experience in the Fine Art field. My work in abstract mixed-media is driven by an academic foundation that includes a comprehensive range of qualifications from a DipHe to an MA, MPhil and Fellowship. This rigorous training informs my practice which bridges the realms of art, forensic investigation and environmental commentary.
My work delves into the intersections of forensic and archaeological process, offering an exploration of themes such as environmental crime, memory and preservation. Through my mixed-media approach, I transform material traces and taping, remnants, relics and discarded studio debris into artworks. My practice spans emboss and recto/verso drawing, painting, sculpture, installation and artist's books, offering layered narratives that are intended to engage both the mind and the senses. A hallmark of my practice is re-purposing discarded materials to imbue them with new meaning and life. This method reflects my commitment to storytelling, sustainability and examining society's impact on its environment. I hope that my work challenges viewers to consider the significance of what is lost and what is preserved, making my art both introspective and relevant. My vision serves both as an inquiry and a call to action. By blending forensic method with fine art processes, I create work which not only tells untold stores but also confront pressing environmental and social themes. I want to challenge conventions of material use, narrative structure and viewer engagement to reflect the complexities of our world and invite the viewer to look close, question deeper and connect with the enduring echoes of what we leave behind.
Recent exhibitions include 70 Drawings and The Lie of The Land, at The Whitaker Museum and Art Gallery in Rossendale, Can These Dry Bones Live in PR1 Gallery, Preston, Silenced Voices in The Portico Library, Manchester. My studio is in Robinwood Mill, Burnley Road, Todmorden OL14 8JA.
