Working across oils, water-based and mixed-media my work fluctuates between pure abstraction and a subtle refence to place or object. Paintings begin with intuitive marks and colour, and are developed over several months, if not years, with several paintings being worked on at a time. The final composition only comes to realisation in the later stages of the process.
My painting explores concepts of repetition and pattern, creating systems and rhythms that reference the natural, human-made and auditory environment. I create compositions from the reiteration of smaller parts that shift and move across the picture plane. Colour is central to my work and often drives my decision making. I work predominantly in oils, though my ideas are developed through extensive use of drawing and print. I am process-led, and each work begins with intuitive marks which over time, with editing and re-working, begin to suggest a structure.
