Deadline: 16/07/2021City: Chester | Region: Cheshire | Country: United Kingdom | Lorelei Hunt
The British Association for Modern Mosaic presents Constellations, a prestigious national exhibition of contemporary mosaics in the magnificent setting of Chester Cathedral.
15 February - 8 March 2022
Curated and organised by British Association for Modern Mosaic North West
The British Association for Modern Mosaic invites you to submit proposals for Constellations, a prestigious national exhibition of contemporary mosaic works of art in the magnificent setting of Chester Cathedral.
The theme Constellations can be interpreted in a variety of ways: as an arrangement of stars, but also as the bringing together of groups of people, ideas or objects. It could equally refer to the uniting of the past, the present and the future - the tradition and current practice of mosaic. We encourage you to propose new work in response to this theme and specifically for this exhibition.
This exciting opportunity coincides with the much anticipated rebrand of the association and the launch of its dynamic new website. Constellations will showcase the very best in modern mosaic, including work from internationally recognised artists, some of the 'shining stars' of the mosaic world. We are looking for new and ambitious pieces which will make a bold impact in the large Chapter House of Chester Cathedral. Both 2D and 3D works will be accepted.
Initially, we are asking for a description of the work you propose to make. We would like a brief description of your inspiration and how your idea has evolved, together with details of expected dimensions and proposed materials. There is no fee for submitting a proposal. To help you find inspiration for your proposal, we are offering guided tours of the cathedral on 23rd and 30th June (subject to any further Coronavirus restrictions). You can also find lots of images and other information online. Chester Cathedral has some fine Victorian mosaics. See also Andamento Vol. 3 2009: 'A Revelation in Masterly Design' by Robert Field.
The deadline for receiving exhibition proposals is Friday 16th July 2021. The artists whose work is selected will then be invited to make their piece(s), which must be completed by 10th January 2022. We will require high quality images of the completed works by this date so that we can build an online version of the exhibition to run concurrently with the physical exhibition in the cathedral. This will allow the work to reach a wider international audience and assist exhibitors with sales (Chester Cathedral will take 10% commission on sales, BAMM will not take any commission).
Whilst there is no fee for submitting a proposal, a modest fee may be required from participating artists to help cover exhibition costs. This is likely to be in the region of £50 or less, depending on the level of sponsorship and support we receive.
You must be a member of the British Association for Modern Mosaic to take part in this exhibition. If you are not currently a member and would like to take part, you can find details of how to join on the BAMM website.
