Calverley Horticultural Society Show Centenary. Help us celebrate our centenary – artistically. To celebrate our 100th show in 2021, we want to commission an artist who will produce a piece of work which will tell our story. We’re open to ideas on what this will be, but would expect it to be a visual work which can be placed in the village library, which is also a local history centre.

Can you work with us to create an artwork to celebrate the centenary of our village show? Calverley is a village between Pudsey and Horsforth, Leeds, with a thriving community of people who love their allotments, gardens, arts and crafts. Calverley Horticultural Society is more than 100 years old and runs the allotments in the centre of the village, as well as supporting environmental initiatives such as Village in Bloom and tree-planting.

The annual show, held on the August Bank Holiday weekend, has become a popular feature in the village calendar. In common with all village shows, it encourages local people to submit entries in classes which include fruit, vegetables, flowers, handicrafts, art, baking, preserves, wine, floral art and photography as well as children’s classes. It’s a fun competition, with entry fees of 50p and prizes of £5. Trophies are presented in certain classes, these have been donated over the years and are very much part of the show’s heritage.

The show attracts people from the village and some from further afield and is a popular social event.

To celebrate our 100th show in 2021, we want to commission an artist who will produce a piece of work which will tell our story. We’re open to ideas on what this will be, but would expect it to be a visual work which can be placed in the village library, which is also a local history centre.

We would encourage the artist to work with one or more local groups to develop the piece. We would also like the artist to produce a simple logo-type stamp from an element of the artwork, which we can use on publicity materials in the run-up to the show in 2021.

We are offering a fee of £750, for this we would expect:

  • Attending up to two meetings in Calverley with user group, one to start the commission, the other to present the final work
  • Linking with the community to help develop the artwork (for example attending the 2020 show in August, or meeting with one or two local groups)
  • Producing an art piece, size and material to be agreed
  • Producing an electronic representation from an element of the artwork to be used in social media etc as the ‘brand’ for the centenary celebrations

When is the deadline?
30th March. We would expect the finished artwork to be produced during the summer/autumn of 2020
How many submissions can I make?
We're looking for an artist who can work with us to produce this unique piece for the community, so we're looking for ideas and how you would approach the commission and what you think the final artwork would look like. We're flexible.
When is the delivery date?
Summer/autumn 2020, to be mutually agreed
Are there payments to artists?
We are offering a fee of £750, for this we would expect:
• Attending up to two meetings in Calverley with user group, one to start the commission, the other to present the final work
• Linking with the community to help develop the artwork (for example attending the 2020 show in August, or meeting with one or two local groups)

What publicity will be provided as part of the opportunity?
We'll be publicising through our social media and local media. We're happy to support the artist if they wish to publicise further

How do you decide on proposals?
We have a small working group who will discuss your submission. We'll be looking for someone we can work with
What happens if my proposal is chosen?
We'll ask you to meet us to discuss how you'd prefer to proceed.
What kind of proposals are you looking for?
We'd like an artist who is interested in local communities and heritage. It would help if they were also interested in allotments/gardening/village life.
Tell us what you've done previously which may fit this, and/or give us an idea of how you'd approach the commission and what you'd expect the finished piece to look like and which media you would use. Also how you'd approach our request for an element of the design to be our centenary brand.
What are the selection criteria?
We're looking for someone who will understand our event and treat it sympathetically.
