Artists from the Skipton and Craven area are invited to submit new work on aspects of the heritage of Skipton and Craven. This is a collaborative exhibition between Craven Arts and Skipton Civic Society.

During the course of the exhibition, there will be a progamme of heritage talks, art workshops and artist demonstrations. 


The brief

Craven Arts and Skipton Civic Society are looking for new, original artworks that respond to Skipton's heritage of culture, buildings and constructions. Elements might include details of architecture, the design and appearance of Skipton's many historical buildings or structures. Applications are encouraged from painters, ceramicists, glass workers, printers, textile artists, sculptors, jewellers and more. We are not inviting photographic or digital submissions on this occasion.   

An artist may choose to depict an entire building / structure or to take inspiration from one detail. The theme is open to interpretation. The building that inspires your work must be within the research area of the Skipton Civic Society. Buildings may be publicly or privately owned. Structures might include bridges, the canal, statues and walls.  Alist of Skipton's heritage buildings can be found here:

Artists may propose / submit up to 5 pieces of finished work to hang / display but  height is limited to 1.5 mtres.  Artists are also invited to submit high quality reproductions of the work they exhibit that will be available in the exhibition shop.

Our commitment to you

If successful, your application will extend your reach to potential buyers and reviewers and help to increase engagement with the arts and culture of Skipton and Craven and attract more visitors to the area. 

Ahead of the public opening, in conjunction with Skipton Civic Society, we will host private views for the local media and press,  the Mayor and local dignatories, businsss owners and occupants of featured buildings and local art educators.

During the course of the exhibition there will be a series of lunchtime talks by the experts at the Skipton Civic Society, a weekend arts project for families, artist demonstrations, a Pecha Kucha style evening, and possibly a pop-up cinema featuring short films of local interest.

Artists are asked ot attend as many events as they can manage. Volunteers will welcome visitirs and be available for sales of work and advice or information.

The exhibition and all the events will be publicised by the Craven Arts marketing team.


Fees

Craven Arts is a charitable foundation that relies upon income from exhibitions, workshops and events to keep the premises open, The exhibition is managed, curated and hosted by expert artists and volunteers.

Craven Arts will charge 20% commission on all sales.


How to submit accepted proposals

Completed works must be submitted on 29th and 30th September, 10am -4pm

Wall mounted work: Artists are invited to submit proposals for up to 5 pieces of work.  Works should not be more that 1.5 x1.5mtr square.  

Sclupture and 3D work: Should not be more than 1.5mtrs in height. Fragile or small, precious work should be supplied with suitable protection. We do have a glass display cabilnet but it would be helpful if artists could supply their own  protective covers / cabinets.

All work must be ready to hang / display when delivered. We reserve the right to reject any works that differ, substantially, from the artist's proposal.

Are there payments to artists?
Unfortunately not, but artists will have the opportunity to sell works and reprductions.
Is there a private view / opening?
There will be a press preview and private viewings for Local business owners, dignitaries, art educators, councilors and friends of teh artists and Skipton Civic Society.

Tuesday - Sunday 11am -4pm

What publicity will be provided as part of the opportunity?
Craven Arts and Skipton Civic Society will invite local TV and radio media, magazines and newspapers to a press preview. We have a substantial list of social media and web sites that carry our 'posters' and stories. Paper posters will be placed in our regular sites around the district and we will supply all participating artists with digital media to share. Workshops. talks, demonstrations will all be posted on our websites as usual.
Do I need to be present?
We invite all participating artists to attend as often as possible. Artists are invited to offer demonstrations of their work, propose workshops and volunteer to welcome visitors. We request that artists should volunteer for at least two 'welcome' sessions during the exhibition.
How do you decide on proposals?
Proposals will be judged on two criteria
1. The relevance of the proposal to the exhibition brief
2. The quality of supporting work as seen on your web site or social media.
What happens if my proposal is chosen?
No later than 10th May, you will receive confirmation and invited to produce the proposed work. You will be given further information about supporting events and marketing programmes and will be able to propose dates for any workshops or demonstrations you would like to hold during the course of the exhibition.
