We invite artists and practitioners to submit visual works for inclusion in an upcoming book project, Exploring the space between the Other and the Self. This publication will examine the boundaries between self and others through photography, painting, and other visual media, complemented by a reflective text. Contributions are sought from individuals whose work interrogates themes of identity, alterity, and the complex interplay between inner and external worlds.

As a visual artist, you are well placed to describe the gap or barrier between your own self and other people. Is this a call for retreat to an interior or a call to adventure?

Do you see this separation in visual terms? Perhaps as a physical construct or through metaphor.

Submissions are earnestly requested from anyone who may already feel some separation from the mainstream.

For this reason, we are not interested in your experience of the "art world", further, we can meet any requirement of privacy and anonymity.

We are particularly interested, but not exclusively, in works that align with the following research themes:

  • Boundaries and Interfaces

    • Representations of physical, emotional, or conceptual boundaries between self and other.

    • The use of spaces (e.g., mirrors, windows, or shadows) to explore separation or connection.

  • The Cast Shadow of the Self

    • Artworks that employ shadows as metaphors or tools for exploring identity and projection.

    • Interpretations of light and dark as symbolic or narrative devices.

  • Self-Portraiture

    • Investigations into vulnerability, exposure, risk, or adventure.

    • Self-portraits that blur the line between personal and universal.

  • Performance to Camera

    • Performative works captured or mediated through the lens.

    • Visual and textual explorations of the camera as both observer and participant.

  • Self and Other in Interaction

    • Representations of relational dynamics, empathy, and alienation.

    • Artistic interpretations of interpersonal or collective identities.
