This is an exciting opportunity for an artist who is interested in creating imaginative light work for the public realm and has a particular interest in working with light and its many forms.

We are looking for artists that are interested in providing exciting installations that audiences can connect and interact with; that can create work of scale and respond to the challenges of the often hostile natural environment of being outside in the autumn/winter.

You will be a problem solver; open to new applications and approaches; and will build on the experience gained in being at Lightworks to further develop your practice; and be willing to share your learning with peers, during and beyond the residency.

We anticipate the residency will start in August 2024 and be completed by November 2024.

• 2 artists will be selected to take part
• Lightworks and the facilities/support are available during the Residency
• At the Lightworks facility there will be access to structural and electrical engineers, artists, animators and lighting technicians. The facility also offers computer aided manufacture processes including CNC cutting and carving

Selection of applicants will be made by the Lightpool programming team and one of our partners from Light Up The North. Artists will be selected on the following criteria:

• Capacity to participate fully in the residency opportunities.
• To develop then deliver R&D work according to the timeframe.
• Openness to collaborate, commitment to a sense of teamwork.
• They are available to attend Lightworks in Blackpool
• They are over 18.

Budget

• A fee of £3,600 is available for the artist to cover all their time, subsistence and expenses incurred in undertaking the residency. We envisage a proportion of the time will be spent on site at Lightworks (but not necessarily exclusively). We have based the fee on the artist working approximately 18 days @ £200 per day over the residency period.
• Materials budget of up to £1,500
• A maximum fee of £500 will be paid to cover accommodation and travel expenses.

We are accepting applications from artists at the early stages of their light art development and are particularly interested in artists who want to experiment, innovate and extend their practice. Shortlisted artists will engage in an online conversation with the Lightpool team to explore their aspirations for this residency and what other support may be needed and available.

The Artist appointed will be required to contribute to an independent evaluation report so we can learn how to develop more successful residencies in the future.

The Artist will be required to enter into a formal agreement for the residency and be able to provide their Unique Tax Reference number.
