Bikalpa Art Foundation is a dedicated platform for nurturing young artistic talents from around the world. We are committed to fostering creativity and cultural exchange and provide a space for emerging artists to thrive. Our Artists in Residence Program was established in 2013 to support artists and creative thinkers of all genres.

Bikalpa Art Foundation's artists-in-residence program is a cornerstone of our mission to nurture artistic talent and contribute to the vibrant arts ecosystem.

We offer a six-week annual, partly funded program for emerging artists under 30.

Through this programme, we aim to provide artists with a creative sanctuary to explore their artistic vision and contribute to the vibrant cultural landscape of Nepal.

The Bikalpa Art Foundation’s Annual Residency Program offers a transformative experience for emerging artists under 30.

This partly funded six-week intensive program provides a structured environment for artistic exploration, experimentation, and growth.

At the same time, it also demands full dedication and commitment from the residents.

This intensive program enables us to curate focused residencies, offering invaluable mentorship and opportunities.

In return for this comprehensive support, residents are encouraged to contribute to the foundation, such as donating a piece of artwork to ensure the program's sustainability and inclusivity.

We are committed to fostering a supportive community where young talents can thrive.

Selected artists will be immersed in a dynamic program that includes mentorship, workshops, and opportunities for collaboration.

We seek committed individuals with a strong artistic vision and a clear understanding of their project goals.

The rigorous selection process emphasises the applicant's artistic vision, demonstrated skills, and a well-articulated project plan.

Accommodation information

The residence accommodations are arranged at the Bikalpa Art House. Residents will be provided with a private suite tiny house that includes a separate washroom and a simple pantry for basic food and drink preparation.

Studio Information

Residents will be provided with a shared studio space and a maker’s studio workshop.

Our maker’s studio workshop is equipped with metal and woodworking tools. It will be available to the residents upon advance booking and approval from the manager.

Paid by Host

Our residency program primarily supports the development of projects in a focused environment with effective coordination and management.

The residency provides artists with the following facilities and services:

Paid by Artists:

Artists are responsible for the following expenses: 

  • Visas
  • Air tickets
  • Accident and Health Insurance
  • Art supplies and other materials
  • Daily food and transportation
  • Mobile phone/SIM card laptop/ computers


Location

Our residencies take place at the Bikalpa Art House located in Chobhar, within a 30-minute travel time from central Kathmandu, a scenic, beautiful location with commanding views of both the majestic mountains and the Kathmandu Valley.

It has fine air, stunning topography, and a major affinity with the Buddhist and Hindu religions from ancient times.

It is the location at which the Buddhist celestial Bodhisattva Manjushri (meditational deity) discovered Kathmandu Valley, then a lake. 

Through Manjushri’s power (including cleaving a gorge at Chobhar, where there are also famous caves) the lake was drained, and in this distant time, the location for what in ages to come to the existence of Kathmandu Valley and its three cities; Kathmandu, Lalitpur, and Bhaktapur.

Who is eligible for this opportunity?
Our residency programs are open but not limited to performance art, multimedia, film/ video, installation, sound, photography, experimental music, and any other forms of visual arts. We also welcome writers, and curators in our residency program.

We welcome great diversity in participation. However, applicants for annual residency for young artists have to be under 30. Those who wish to participate in duos or groups must apply separately and enclose a letter of request to work together during the residency.
What kind of projects are accepted?
We expect applications from a wide range of projects and are open to proposals for all phases of the project, from initial concept to full production. Artists already working on a project in any stage of production- ideation to conception, and those who wish to explore during their residency and work on a new project are also encouraged to apply.

How many works can I submit?
As a part of the application, we ask you to submit a recent short portfolio max of 5 projects/ 20 images
What is the duration and timelines of the residency?
The Annual Residency for Young Artists is designed and dedicated to supporting young artists. It has all fixed programs and dates that follow the same every year.

Open Call for Application July- August
Application deadline: November 27
Result Announce: 1st week of January
Residence Program: March 15 - April 22
Open Studio/ Exhibition: April 25- April 30
What is the expected outcome of the residency?
Our residency program is a place for experimentation, exploration, and innovation, and artists are encouraged to share the outcome of the residency with the local community. So, we expect artists in support of our team to organise artist talks, presentations, workshops, and an open studio/ exhibition upon completion at the end of the residency programme.
Are there any expectations from the selected artists?
This residency opportunity is your time and we encourage you to use it the best for your personal growth and the positive impact to the larger community. Don’t forget your application for the residency being selected to the program means someone’s application is declined. Therefore, we want you to be fully committed and take advantage of the residency to the fullest.

We expect selected residents to be committed to the program, follow the timelines, arrive before the residency starts, and depart after the residency is completed, clearing out space and all.
Residents are required to prepare multiple presentations to their fellow residents and the local artistic community and open to the public.
How do I get to the residency space?
30 to 45 minutes drive from the Tribhuvan International Airport, Kathmandu to Bikalpa Art House, Chobhar-6, Kirtipur, Kathmandu, Nepal. You may get public transportation, a taxi, or a private vehicle from the airport directly. We normally send someone to pick the artists up from the airport.
Can I bring my partner/ family member?
Yes, there will be an additional $15 per day cost for accommodation per person, and they are responsible for all other expenses.
