Photosynthesis Magazine is holding an open call for our first issue to be released in June 2023. The theme for our innaugural issue will be "Origins". All submissions should fall into this theme of beginnings, starting anew, and rebirth. Works can (and are encouraged to) explore philosophical ideas about origins. This call is open to all artists worldwide. Submission and participation in this magazine is free.

Collage is on the rise as an art form and it is being explored in new and intriguing ways every day. As a new and independent magazine, we are here to highlight talented and thought-provoking artists that are not afraid to push the boundaries of what is socially acceptable.

We are specifically keeping our eyes out for artists that cross lines that have been set by aristocratic elites and works that force us to ask again questions that we thought we had answered long ago. What is art? Who gets to decide what art is? Who is allowed to make it?

An important part of collage work is how it tells stories in a torn and fractured way that no other art form can quite touch. It can be an artist's way of sorting thoughts and memories, a way of combining them, and a way of connecting them to new ideas and philosophies.

We look for art that is beautiful, painful, emotion-filled, gory, devastating, aesthetic, clever, and political. Above all, it is crucial that the message behind the work is significant and purposeful.

This opportunity is free! After some deliberation, the team has decided that we will no longer be charging participation fees.
Our original take on the matter is that a lot of art opportunities ask for a fee to participate. Galleries, other indie magazines, websites, fairs… the list goes on!

However, this magazine was created to be uplifting for artists, not hindering. We don’t want it to look like you paid for your ticket into the magazine - we want it to truly be based on the quality of your artwork and the stories you tell. THAT is the heart of this publication.

What publicity will be provided as part of the opportunity?
Facebook, Instagram, the magazine itself, and permanent listing on our website unless the artist requests to be removed from any of the above.
How do you decide on proposals?
All submissions are judged based on quality of the artwork, quality of the photo of the artwork (because it will be published and printed and needs to be clear), and it’s relation to the theme.
