An exhibition opportunity for photographers to exhibit work in an amazing historic site on the Isle of Portland during PRIDE month June 2025.

WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR?

Photographs that explore the overlooked, the unseen and aspects of otherness. The exhibition will be displayed alongside a photographic exhibition by artist Gil Mualem Doron, 'No Man's Land'.

You can see Gil's work HERE. The exhibition is part of our PRIDE celebration programme, but the content is not exclusively of or by LGBTQIA+ photographers or artists.

Selected works will be installed inside the unlit tunnels and chambers of the historic High Angle Battery on the Isle of Portland, Dorset.

Visitors will discover the artworks by torchlight. Selected works will be printed on suitable materials to max A2 size and hung by the b-side production team.

HOW IS THE WORK SELECTED?

Photographs will be selected by a panel consisting of members of our Portland LGBTQIA+ community group, guest curator Gil Mualem Doron and members of the b-side team.

Once selected, you will be asked to send a digital high quality image that b-side can print up ready for display. We will let you know the material we hope to print onto, as conditions in the tunnels will dictate this.

We are committed to minimising our environmental impact and will consider the carbon footprint related to the production, materials and installation.

HOW LONG IS THE EXHIBITION ON DISPLAY?

The exhibition is part of our PRIDE 2025 celebration programme, but the content of UNDERGROUND GALLERY is not exclusively about or of the LGBTQI+ community.

The exhibition will be open to the public June 26 - 29th, 2025. The work will be stewarded at all times. There will be a launch event that all contributing photographers are invited to.

ARE PHOTOGRAPHERS PAID?

Yes, we will pay selected artists a one-off £50 exhibition fee and cover the costs of printing the image ready for display. We are accepting existing photographs and photographs made especially for this open call.

If you consent, printed images will be kept by b-side after the exhibition as part of b-side's archive. If the work is exhibited again at a later stage we will notify everyone who contributed.

WHO CAN ENTER?

We welcome applications from artists at any career stage. We deeply value diversity and are working to make our application process accessible to all.

We welcome proposals from those currently under-represented in the arts and particularly from disabled artists.

WHO IS B-SIDE?

B-side is an arts organisation based on the Isle of Portland, Dorset, UK. We are part of the Arts Council's National Portfolio.

The island is the beating heart that inspires B-side’s work, but our projects and opportunities extend way beyond its boundaries.

B-side commissions site-responsive work for public spaces on the Isle of Portland, Dorset (UK)  , revealing aspects of the island, its environment and communities that are often overlooked.

We commission artworks that speak to this magical place and to our island’s relationship to elsewhere.

We commission work that is thoughtful, maverick, subversive, poetic or just simply delicious looking.

Check out our website to see more about what we do, how we work, and also more about the magical Isle of Portland www.b-side.org.uk

Between April and September 2025 b-side will be programming cultural events at The High Angle Battery on behalf of Dorset Council.
