We would like to invite artists to submit proposals for how they would use one of the cells in the prison (2.5m high, 2.1m width and 3.8m length). These proposals must be focused upon using drawing (in it broadest sense) as a medium.

What is it?

The ‘Prison Drawing Project’ is a visual arts project that explores contemporary drawing in response to the space/ building of Dean Road Prison, Scarborough. The ‘Old Borough of Scarborough Jail’ was built in 1866 but it has not been used as a prison since the 1960s. Since this time it has been used as an occasional set for films and TV series or as an atmospheric venue for events and performances

Six artists: Tracy Himsworth, Andrew Cheetham, Andy Black, Kate Black (Gobstoppershop), Sally Taylor and Lucy O’Donnell will exhibit their work in the prison and work as a team to select a further 10 artists to exhibit alongside them. Therefore, 16 artists in total will be exhibiting in the prison. This brief invites professional and student artists to become part of this unique and exciting event.

This project is part of ‘Coastival’, Scarborough’s annual creative arts festival which takes place 12th to 14th February 2016.The event plays host to dance, music, theatre, performance and the visual arts, and attracts huge numbers of visitors for the weekend.
