The Art House is seeking proposals from emerging curators to produce a new exhibition in 2019. The selected curator will work with our artist-in-residence as well as The Arts Council Collection to design and develop a new exhibition at The Art House in Wakefield in July 2019, during Yorkshire Sculpture International.

The successful individual will bring their own curatorial ideas and research to the project, and we hope they will use the opportunity to develop and experiment with their own interests in this particular context.

The Art House hosts a series of artists-in-residence each year, working with established and emerging artists. We provide them with time, space and support to produce new work and develop their practice. We have a flat in the building where artists stay, and studio and exhibition space that they also use. Our artists-in-residence will stay for around four weeks at a time. The curator for this opportunity will be able to speak to and meet with the artist prior to their residency starting and before selecting works.

The curator will:

  • Work with the artist in residence and The Art House programme team to design and develop an exhibition in our main exhibition space.
  • Select works from the Arts Council Collection, to be shown alongside new artwork produced by the artist in residence.
  • Programme and participate in an ‘in-conversation’ or similar event to provide further context to or enhance the work and the exhibition.
  • Receive mentoring from curators or arts professionals (to be identified by the curator).

They will receive:

  • A fee of £1500
  • A travel budget of up to £250
  • A budget for exhibition production costs
  • A budget for mentoring sessions of up to £850 (4 x £150 sessions plus travel)

This is a unique opportunity for a curator to work closely with an established artist during the production of new work, as well as gaining experience of working with collections. The individual will be supported by the programme team at The Art House to deliver the project.

This opportunity is open to individuals who are looking to gain further curatorial experience in a supported environment.

Key information and dates:

  • Deadline for Applications: 23:59 GMT Thursday 7th March
  • Visit to the Arts Council Collection stores at Longside, Yorkshire: 15th April
  • Selection of artworks from Arts Council Collection will have to be made by May 2019
  • The exhibition will open on the 31st July 2019 and close on 29th September 2019
