Wembley Park Art Trail: Phone Boxes Winter Installation An open call for artists to create an interactive winter installation, using Wembley Park's restored K2 phone boxes as symbols of dialogue and connection. This installation will transform the phone boxes into illuminated mini-galleries, inviting the public to reflect on communication in today's digital age.

Wembley Park Art Trail: Phone Boxes Winter Installation

Wembley Park is inviting proposals for a new winter installation as part of our iconic Art Trail, focusing on three fully-restored K6 red phone boxes located in Arena Square, in front of OVO Arena Wembley and opposite Brent Civic Centre.

These phone boxes are rich in heritage and will serve as the perfect canvas for a captivating public art piece that explores the theme of dialogue and connection in today’s digital age.

The Concept:

We encourage artists to use the phone boxes as metaphors for meaningful communication in a world increasingly fragmented by digital isolation and unrest.

The installation should reflect on how we communicate—past, present, and future—inviting the public to engage with and contemplate the importance of dialogue.

Each phone box will become its own interactive ‘mini-gallery,’ incorporating illuminated objects, lights, or other elements that evoke the spirit of connection.

Find more details about the project, including visuals and a moodboard here.

Key Specifications:

  • Location: 3 restored K6 phone boxes in Arena Square.
  • Power Supply: Each box has internal power, and the installation can be treated as a single connected unit or three separate pieces.
  • Light Boxes: The boxes contain LED light boxes, with the option to apply printed vinyl. However, we encourage artists to use illuminated objects visible through the glass for a more dynamic effect.
  • Vinyl Dimensions:
    • Front: Translucent vinyl x 1 (565 x 1655mm)
    • Sides: Reverse printed vinyl x 2 (700 x 2000mm), with a 3mm bleed required for all designs.
  • Reflective Vinyl Suggestion: We suggest incorporating reflective vinyl on two or three sides to create an infinity mirror effect inside the phone boxes, adding depth and intrigue.
  • Closed Installation: The phone boxes must remain closed at all times to maintain the integrity of the installation.

Creative Considerations:

  • The installation should use lights, either static or dynamic, to convey energy and movement, symbolising the flow of dialogue and communication. Consider using fibre optic-based lighting or DMX-controlled LEDs for dynamic shifts in colour and intensity.
  • We encourage playful, interactive designs that invite visitors to engage, share, and capture the moment. The piece should be visually impactful, drawing in passersby and creating a joyful, shareable experience.
