CuratorSpace Artist Bursary #20: Ali Pickard
Ali Pickard, otherwise known as The Yaffingale, is interested in which stories are told, and who tells them. Trained in metal art as part of a Women's Welding collective, she creates 3D, kinetic artworks, mixing wood and metal with fabric and embroidery.
"I make sculpture and automata, incorporating little-known historical stories into my work and exploring the ways in which the past relates to today's culture. I am currently in the process of creating a new body of work, including a series of intricately hand-embroidered characters which explore lost words in English and Welsh. These textile-based pieces draw inspiration from the elegance of Victorian banner ladies, through to contemporary street art.
Throughout June and July I exhibited related works at the Maker Showcase Exhibition at Tŷ Pawb in Wrexham, and will now develop a more comprehensive collection with the aim of exhibiting at further venues across the country. I’m currently researching the words and contexts I want to explore and will then move on to producing the prototypes and resolving technical challenges before moving onto making the final pieces."
