CuratorSpace Artist Bursary #21: Nicola Garvey

After changing careers later in life, Nicola Garvey graduated with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art from Leeds Arts University in 2021. Her work is inspired by the everyday and promotes the overlooked and underrated, which is reflected across the wide range of media that she uses.

"I am currently exploring weaving with plastic packaging, which I have been gathering and utilising, alongside natural fibres. Repurposing materials in this way reflects the sustainability and environmental concerns of my subject matter, which include investigations into rising sea levels and melting ice caps.

I have been learning to weave on dobby looms for 2 years, under Agnis Smallwood at Sunnybank Mills, Farsley and have attended a month-long Erasmus trip to Transylvania, learning traditional skills such as peg loom weaving to make functional work and contemporary art objects. I have also exhibited weavings at open studio events in Calderdale and group exhibitions in Leeds, as well as contributing to the Landmark Trust Calverley Hall regeneration scheme.

These experiences will enable me to create my new work, in the form of an ark, to highlight climate change and the ongoing climate emergency. My aim is to produce exhibition-ready work to submit to the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 2024."
