CuratorSpace Artist Bursary #22: Melanie King

Melanie King is an artist and curator with a specific focus on astronomy. She is co-Director of super/collider, Lumen Studios, and the London Alternative Photography Collective. Melanie is a practice-based PhD Candidate in Fine Art at the Royal College of Art.

"My project 'In and Of The Land' will respond to work produced as part of two self-directed residencies; The Lengths Residency in the Scottish Highlands, and Island Darkroom Residency in the Outer Hebrides. During the residencies, I aim to use large format film photography, and develop my photographs using a new seaweed developer recipe. I aim to capture a time-lapse of the aurora borealis using an all-sky raspberry-pi camera.

These residencies offer a period of one week each to focus solely on my practice, developing my skills with sustainable photographic processes. I am keen to explore the idea of an embodied experience of landscape, and its relation to working with plants and materials that are from the landscapes that I photograph. As part of this work, I will be collaborating with Jess Holdengarde towards the development of a two-person exhibition at The Margate School in April 2024. This exhibition will also be supported by the outputs of workshops held at Open Eye Gallery, Land Art Collective and the Dark Peak Photo Festival in Glossop.

This work is a development of recent work with sustainable photographic processes. Recent solo exhibitions include 'Precious Metals' at Photofusion in 2022 and 'Ancient Light' at Big Day Film Collective, Philadelphia, USA in 2021.

I have also exhibited in group shows with Space Studios London, Stanley & Audrey Burton Gallery at The University of Leeds, Look Climate Lab at Open Eye Gallery, Turner Contemporary Margate The Photographers’ Gallery, Argentea Gallery, Guest Projects. I have exhibited in a wide range of international galleries, including Analog Film Photography Association in Florida, Williamson Gallery in Pasadena, VM Art Gallery, Karachi, Pakistan and CAS Gallery in Osaka, Japan."
