CuratorSpace Artist Bursary #25: Emily Hawes
Emily Hawes is an artist and educator based between Lancing and Bournemouth, working with 8mm & 16mm analogue film. Her films unearth the interconnections between places, people, histories and ecologies.
"My project focuses on embedding sustainable, ecological, and DIY film processing techniques into my filmmaking practice. The primary output will be 'EEL', a short 16mm film shot across Somerset's marshes, peatlands, and woodlands, exploring the region's folklore, with themes of eels, witchcraft, land enclosures, and species extinction. To reinforce its ecological message, parts of the film will be processed in river water from the Brue, Axe, and Frome.
My aim is to deepen my understanding of experimental film processes and develop a sustainable, DIY approach that reduces reliance on costly film labs, allowing me to fully integrate my ecological interests into my practice. In the long term, this will enable me to establish a DIY film lab at home and promote sustainable practices in filmmaking, which I plan to share through workshops, teaching, and community outreach."
