CuratorSpace Artist Bursary #24: Fiona Campbell

Fiona Campbell is a Somerset-based artist, educator, curator, and a Member of the Royal Society of Sculptors. She creates sculptural installations, using recycled and found materials. At the root of her practice is the notion of interconnectedness, with a focus on environmental concerns about human exploitation of nature.

"My new work consists of a series of stilt structures: precarious hybrid forms around the notion of resilience, adaptation, making do. The sculptural assemblages will be made from found, recycled & waste materials, layered, stitched and patched together, advocating reuse, care and repair in the context of global consumerism and waste. The stilt structures are made from branches, coir, copper wire, handmade naturally dyed fabric, plastic netting, polyester stuffing, jute, sisal, wool, thread, nylon tights and leather scraps - which relates to the former leather industry.

This large body of work will be shown together in an exhibition, curated by Jan Ollis and myself. The exhibition, 'As Old As The Hills', looks at the ancient layered history of Mendip and the Somerset Levels – interdependent landscapes which have shaped and been shaped by humans for millennia. A ridge of limestone hills, riddled with river-made caves, sits above the wetlands whose peat bogs and pastures rely upon a complex system of natural and man-made channels for drainage. Still, floods are frequent.

The exhibition will be shown as part of Somerset Art Weeks Festival (21 September - 6 October) at the Bauhaus building (Zig Zag), Glastonbury, and will feature ten well-known and diverse artists working in a range of disciplines from large-scale sculptural installations, textiles, assemblage, to audio visual photography and performance. Our themes have both local and universal relevance: climate change, the layered history of rivers and marshes, heritage, and industry. I am hoping these works will have impact on visitors in various ways, provoking questions, imaginations and raising eco awareness."
