CuratorSpace Artist Bursary #4: Joe Cotgrave
The first of our two bursary winners for CuratorSpace Bursary #4 is Liverpool-based artist Joe Cotgrave, whose practice explores personal narratives as a young gay man living with HIV. His work engages with audiences to create meaningful conversation surrounding issues relating to the virus.
Cotgrave interrogates the language used around HIV and address stigma through installation & sculpture, public discussions & workshops, and functional artworks such as film and wearable art objects.
He will use the bursary to produce a new body of sculptural works, based on LGBTQ+ spaces such as saunas and clubs, as well as commissioning a curated series of meetings, actions & forums to bring professionals from different fields and the public together to discuss HIV. The work will be produced and exhibited alongside the Keith Haring retrospective at Tate Liverpool in October 2019.
His previous experience includes working on national HIV awareness campaigns such as 'CantPassItOn', through collaborating with THT and BBC3, as well as exhibiting his work at Temple Du Gout: France, The Walker: Liverpool and The Arthouse: Wakefield.
