CuratorSpace Artist Bursary #12: Julia Keenan
Julia Keenan is visual artist who works with materials to explore participatory systems of objects and environments. She is also an associate at ASPEX Portsmouth and CAS Arts Andover and regularly collaborates with museum and gallery spaces.
"My most recent project is called 'The Anti-Structuralist Gesture' which explores the creation of capsule fashion collection as a conceptual installation ad performance. The works aims to disrupt the unconscious stream of ideo-logical and ideo-lived imagery across television, advertising and social media. The collection draws on familiar tropes of femininity such as hair, eyelashes, nails, etc, and body modification through the use cocoon coats, padded body extensions and prosthetic bandage handbags. Within the project, I am situated as fashion designer, constructing impossible garments which mirror the beauty standards to which women are held. These garments will feature patterned imagery created during my residency at ASPEX gallery in 2019."
