CuratorSpace Artist Bursary #25: Pauline Blanchet

Pauline Blanchet is an award-winning film director and producer whose work explores sports, nationalism, and identity. She is currently pursuing a PhD at the School of Advanced Study and EHESS, studying urban identity in North Macedonia. She also runs Aral Sea Productions and is a producer at HERProductions.

"My project is the production of a short video artwork 'Our Woman in Albania' reimagining the life and legacy of Margaret Hasluck, a Scottish scholar and WWII operative, using an experimental approach. Utilising archival materials from various archives across the UK and wider Europe, including personal letters, folk tales, and intelligence reports, the work will explore the fragmented aspects of Hasluck's life, to merge historical documentation with modern visual and sound techniques.

The use of folk tales as a narrative thread, layered with archival footage, soundscapes, and contemporary visuals of Albania, will create a hybrid form that engages both the past and the present in a single visual language. Through highlighting the female gaze in cultural preservation, the project aims to challenge conventional representations of women in history, positioning Hasluck not just as a scholar but as an active force in shaping Albania’s cultural legacy."
