CuratorSpace Artist Bursary #26: Sam Ivin

Sam Ivin is a photographic artist who explores social issues and the people connected with them. By documenting their stories and perspectives he hopes to provide a more personal, tangible understanding of them. His process often involves hosting photography workshops, where he creates collaborative artwork with project participants.

"My socially engaged project involves working with unpaid and young care givers across England, supporting them to develop creative skills and share their experiences through photography and art. Through a series of workshops, participants will explore photography techniques while creating artwork that reflects their lives. Participants will develop photography skills including composition and camera work, in genres such as street photography and portraiture.

More importantly, they will have space to create, connect, and share their stories. A smaller group will collaborate with me to create a series of portraits. These will be exhibited in eight locations to ensure their stories are seen and acknowledged, as well as highlighting the potential for socially engaged practice to produce high quality artwork.

I plan to further develop my practice by incorporating medium format photography, a technique new to my work. The project will also enable me to make relationships with new partners, including Action for Carers Surrey, and my build on professional connections with Open Eye Gallery, Cares Trust Chester, and Cheshire and Warrington Carers Trust."
