CuratorSpace Artist Bursary #1: Sophie Cundale
We are delighted to announce the winner of the first CuratorSpace Artist Bursary, London-based artist, Sophie Cundale. Sophie specialises in moving-image, and works with film and performance to explore the extremity of psychological states.
Cundale will use the award to undertake research for a new artists’ film which centres around grief, entitled The Near Room, currently in pre-production. Material collected from site visits and interviews will detail her experiences of watching boxers train and go through the process of ‘making weight’, as well as exploring the effects of Cotard’s Syndrome, a rare symptom of depression which leads a person to believe they are already dead. She is working with Film and Video Umbrella to produce the film, with a view to exhibit the finished work in 2020.
Cundale's previous work has been commissioned by Serpentine Galleries and South London Gallery, and screened at Temporary Gallery, Cologne; Spike Island, Bristol; Govett-Brewster Gallery, New Zealand; Catalyst Arts, AMINI festival, Belfast; Art Night, London; CHAO / Camera Stylo at VCD festival, Beijing, Innsbruck Biennale, Austria and been hosted on vdrome.org.
