CuratorSpace Artist Bursary #5: Woman Up!
Woman Up! is a series of podcasts devised by artist and curator Amy Dignam from Desperate Artwives in collaboration with Artist Susan Merrick and in association with the Women’s Art Library. The series invites self-identifying women artists, academics, campaigners and initiators to come and speak with them, not only to record and celebrate the achievements and practice of these women, but also to raise awareness on issues that affect women.
Susan’s practice explores conversations, language and communication. With a background in BSL/English Interpreting and Sociology she makes work utilising a mix of social engagement, live art, installation and film. Amy is a multidisciplinary artist, curator, founder of the DAW project and one of the founding mothers of the Maternal Journal. Her work is focused on creating spaces and providing exhibition and event platforms for women artists and artists who are parents or have caring responsibilities.
Woman Up! exists as a space to democratise access to different voices as well as promoting the archiving of women's history. The CuratorSpace bursary will enable the project to connect with more artists both nationally and internationally throughout 2020, and to build on their existing library of podcasts. The recording and archiving of the podcasts will be supported by the Women's Art Library (WAL), Special Collections, Goldsmiths Library and Althea Greenan.
Through engaging with people, organisations and audiences, the project aims to question and explore how new media can allow us to open up spaces and access to marginalised voices.
