Helena Russell Silversmith South Yorkshire, United Kingdom
Helena Russell is a self-employed silversmith based in Sheffield. After graduating from BA in Jewellery and Metalwork 2016 and MA in Design at Sheffield Hallam 2018, Helena continued her passion of working in metal and took part in the Starter Studio program for early career silversmiths and jewellers at Yorkshire Artspace. She now has a shared studio space in Yorkshire Artspace.
Helena Russell's practice is inspired by her fascination with honest mechanisms and movement. This inspiration flows through her collection of silverware and jewellery, from multi-stacking candlestick holders to bayonet fitting boxes and “box-locket” pendants. As well as using precious sterling silver to make her handmade pieces, Helena incorporates base metal, such as copper and gilding metal. These base metals go through a final process of patination, a technique which creates vibrant greens, blues and purples to the metals surface.
Helena has been self-employed for five years and she has spent this time developing her skills, taking part in exhibitions and craft fairs around the country and challenging herself with taking part in skill training programs as well as applying for competitions and awards.
Helena was awarded the "Design in Silver" award at New Designs, London in 2016, she was also awarded of the "Jerwood Art Fund Makers Open" 2021 for her collaborative project with fellow silversmith, Francisca Onumah.
