Claire Louise Mather West Yorkshire, United Kingdom
Based in West Yorkshire I am a visual artist and creative practitioner working with stitched paper, textiles, and mixed media to explore themes of place and belonging. My work aims to bridge contemporary fine art with textile-based processes, layering paper and thread to create textural, abstract compositions that reflect the fragility and resilience of landscapes.
Inspired by nature and the landscape my practice transforms traditional stitching techniques into a mark-making process, where thread becomes both a structural and expressive tool. Pieces often evoke a sense of calmness and depth, responding to the shifting nature of memory and physical space.
With a background in community arts and education I have exhibited in galleries, festivals, and site-specific installations, often engaging with local communities in collaborative and participatory projects. I have worked with organisations such as Gallery Oldham, The Prince’s Foundation and Freedom Festival Hull co-creating artwork that connects people, heritage and creative expression.
I am currently expanding my research into large-scale stitched paper works, pushing the boundaries of material and surface manipulation. My work continues to evolve, exploring the intersections of handmade and machine-made processes, fragility and permanence and tradition and innovation.
