NYOS enables artists and makers to open their studios, meet, promote and sell their work direct to the public on 3/4 & 10/11 June 2023.

North Yorkshire Open Studios is an annual event showcasing the work of over 100 artists across the region.

Established in 2005, this much loved event has grown to become one of the major events in North Yorkshire’s cultural calendar, as well as one of the North’s most prestigious open studios events.

With studios located right across the county, from the remote hills of the Upper Dales to the suburban streets of Harrogate, across the Vale of York to the rural North York Moors and Coast, visitors have the opportunity to visit unique and varied artist venues, surrounded by stunning North Yorkshire landscapes.

NEW DIRECTION

This year marks an exciting change for NYOS, as we move to an annual membership-based system. This means that you only have to be selected once, and are then part of NYOS for as long as you wish, building a strong artistic community right across the county.

Please read our FAQs for more information on these changes.

How is NYOS run?
NYOS is a not-for-profit organisation, led by a Steering Group of North Yorkshire artists from its membership.
You can find out who we are and our different roles here: https://www.nyos.org.uk/about/
Who is eligible for this opportunity?
You must live and/or work in North Yorkshire and be an emerging or established professional visual artist.

You should:
- Be a professional visual or applied artist committed to the making and selling of high quality contemporary art or craft. Emerging and new artists are encouraged to apply
- Be engaged in current practice consistent with professional status and be able to demonstrate good technical ability to that standard.
-Have an accessible workspace, or be able to collaborate with another artist/maker who has a studio space (NYOS can help find artists to share studio space), or identify an appropriate alternative space.
When is the deadline?
11:59pm, Sunday 2nd October September 2022
How much does it cost?
We charge £150. Emerging artists (within 2 years) pay a reduced fee of £75.
Artists pay a commission of 10% on their sales over £300.
NYOS is a not-for-profit event meaning all application and commission fees are used to cover the running costs of the event.
Do I need to have my own studio?
No. If your creative space is not suitable for visitors you can share with another NYOS artist, but please be aware that they also need to be selected. NYOS can help artists who don’t have their own studio space by finding other shared venues or studios for them to use. A suitable venue must be finalised by 20th November 2022.
How do you choose applications?
Each year we employ a selection panel of 3 arts professionals (curators, gallery owners, academics, professional artists etc.) to choose new artists for NYOS.
This panel is different each year, so we encourage you to reapply if you were not previously successful.
Please note that the organisers of NYOS have no input into the decisions made by the independent selection panel.
What criteria are applications assessed on?
- Quality of the applicant’s work
- Contemporary nature of the work
- Image quality (professional in style and print ready for use in the brochure and other promotional purposes)

Decisions are made entirely on the information submitted in this application.
Artists who submit poor quality images are unlikely to be selected.

Non- selected artists may ask for feedback on their submission, which is provided by our selection panel.
I have taken part in NYOS in the past, do I still need to apply?
The changes to selection have come into effect from this year.
Artists who took part in NYOS22 do not have to go through selection.
Artists who have taken part in NYOS before 2022 must reapply.

We cannot undermine the process of selection from previous years.
Can artists from York apply?
North Yorkshire Open Studios and York Open Studios are in agreement that artists can only take part in one event each year. This is to keep our separate shows varied and fresh for the public. We encourage you to apply for both events if eligible, but if you are selected for both you must make a decision which you will exhibit with by 16th September.

York artists can stay members of NYOS, even if they choose to show with YOS. Giving them the option to take part in future NYOS years if they wish.
Do I have to attend any meetings?
Yes, you must attend your local regional meetings (Dales, Central, Moors or Coast) venues tbc by your Area Coordinator.

Please remember that NYOS is a county wide community effort by its artists to put on the best event possible and is not run as a commercial venture by a business. By committing to take part in NYOS23 you are expected to engage in the event and the responsibilities that come with participation.
When artists do not turn up to meetings it leaves the area coordinators and other artists with extra work and admin.
If you are unable to attend the meetings you must contact your area coordinator asap after selection.
What publicity will be provided as part of the opportunity?
We produce a high quality brochure that is distributed to our extensive mailing list and at venues across the region. Each artist has a profile listing in the brochure and also on our website.
