The Scott Creative Arts Foundation (SCAF) holds an annual award for emerging artists based in Yorkshire. SCAF invites you to submit a proposal that creatively expresses this years theme; PERCEPTION.

There will be 10 awards overall with the winning artist receiving £1250, 2nd £500, 3rd £250 and 7 further awards of £100 each to the remaining shortlisted artists.

The award is open to up-and-coming artists in the Yorkshire Region who are not represented by an agent and are not yet recognised by art critics. For further information and to see the past winners and finalists please go to the award website www.scafemergingartist.co.uk

SCAF will hold an exhibition and award ceremony at The Art House in Thirsk for the 10 finalists. A second exhibition will follow within the Yorkshire region to extend the reach of the finalists work.  Finalists will have a permanent artist page on our website and will have other benefits including use of SCAF facilities.

PERCEPTION.

Art is the story of perception. Perception in art is deeply complex including the subjective response of the viewer, the intention of the artist and external influences such as social pressure that seeks to persuade us to interpret something in a certain way.

Perception in art is also deeply intwined with psychology. Our brains are hard wired to see structure, logic and patterns to help us to make sense of the world we live in. Survival often requires rapid interpretation of our surroundings and to that end our brains have evolved to continually make shortcuts to speed up the process of visual perception.  These shortcuts are often exploited in art and design.

There are three stages :-

1. Draw up a proposal - using words and images to best describe the piece you would like to submit as the finished piece. (If you are successful in this stage you will receive an invite as a finalist)

2.  Create the artwork you have proposed in stage one. (We will ask you to deliver the artwork to Thirsk)

3. Judging of the final 10 pieces and the winner announced at the SCAF EAA 2024 exhibition on Friday 1st July from 6pm.

The SCAF EAA 2024 Judges are:-

Dr Sue Armstrong Trustee and Artistic Director of the Scott Creative Arts Foundation

Eloise Ross Art & Design Project Officer at York & Scarborough Teaching Hospital's NHS Foundation Trust and Freelance Photographer

Jess Kidd Multidisciplinary Artist and Winner of the SCAF Emerging Artist Award 2023
