A cross-generational, multi-disciplinary, post-pandemic exhibition by East Anglian artists, supported by the East Anglia Art Fund.

A cross-generational, multi-disciplinary, post-pandemic exhibition by East Anglian artists, supported by the East Anglia Art Fund.

Artists Georgia Green and Eleanor Rodwell are presenting a 6-day-long group show of artists rooted in East Anglia, opening at The Shoe Factory (Norwich) on 4/3/23.

Aiming to champion inclusivity and the area’s thriving art scene, ‘Unconsumed’ will showcase the breadth of local creatives, particularly those from non-traditional arts backgrounds. The exhibition will also be an opportunity to show pieces made during the pandemic, highlighting the importance of creativity during lockdown and how making is a very human response to crisis.

We’re looking for submissions from artists living and practicing in, or with a strong connection to East Anglia. We particularly welcome artists without a formal arts education, who live in rural areas or who have found it hard to show artworks made during the pandemic. Creatives at any point in their career are encouraged to apply.

There is no submission fee.

We do ask for a £10 participation fee once your application is accepted to add to the funding we’ve already secured. This will allow us to hire a professional photographer/videographer, print promotional material and hopefully an exhibition publication, plus support our invigilation expenses. This will benefit participating artists as it will allow for professional documentation of the show which we will share with all our exhibitors, and enable us to pay the creatives working with us a fair wage. However, we absolutely do not want this to be a barrier to artists applying, so please do get in contact if this causes an issue.

Who is eligible for this opportunity?
● Only artists who live/practice in, or have a strong connection to East Anglia are eligible to enter. We welcome everyone including amateurs, students, semi-professionals and/or graduates, professional or established artists. For this brief East Anglia includes Cambridgeshire as well as Suffolk and Norfolk.

● Applicants must be age 18 or over.

● We only accept submissions that have been created by the applicant during the previous 24 months; the
work must be your own.

● When filling in the submission form please note that the name you provide will be the name printed in
the exhibition material if successful.

● We welcome works in all mediums including paintings, prints, installations, sculptures, performance
and video work. The Shoe Factory is large and spacious, so we will be encouraging big installation
pieces and sculptural work to utilise the space fully.

● Video work and sound installation pieces may be submitted. However, we do not have any speakers or projection equipment. So artists will have to provide their own technical equipment/projector/speaker etc, at their own risk. We will be invigilating the show constantly during the opening hours. But we cannot guarantee the safety of any equipment or artwork on site.

● Triptychs (artworks made up of three parts) / diptych (artworks made up of two parts) or multiple-part work can be submitted. You will need to photograph and submit the work as one piece - not as two or three separate works. If your work is selected for the exhibition, please make sure all parts are labelled on the back. A triptych for example should be labelled: 1/3, 2/3, and 3/3 so they don’t get separated when they come into The Shoe Factory.

● Group work or collaborative projects may be submitted by one artist willing to represent the work on behalf of their collective.

The Shoe Factory and the organisers Georgia Green and Eleanor Rodwell can accept no liability for loss of or damage to works submitted for exhibition. You are advised to arrange your own public liability insurance for any artwork submissions. We recommend purchasing the a-n membership which offers a year of public liability insurance included in its membership for £38. Insurance is not mandatory but it is advised.
When is the deadline?
11:59pm on February 8th 2023.
How many works can I submit?
Up to three artworks will be accepted per artist for the exhibition. Any more than three works submitted
for the exhibition will not be considered.

We are also happy to take up to five smaller works for the pop-up shop in addition to the exhibition pieces. Artists are welcome to submit small drawings, paintings, prints, textiles, pottery etc for us to sell on the shop tables. 2D artwork must be no bigger than 70cm on the longest side as we will struggle to display works that are larger than this.
When is the delivery date?
Drop-off of selected works at The Shoe Factory Social Club Friday 3rd March 2023 10am–2pm.
Delivery window for selected works opens Monday 20th February and closes Wednesday 1st March.
When do I need to collect my work?
Artwork collection date is Friday 10th March 2pm-6pm. Unsold work is to be collected from The Shoe Factory.
How much does it cost?
There is no submission fee.

We do ask for a £10 participation fee once your application is accepted to add to the funding we’ve already secured. This will allow us to hire a professional photographer/videographer, print promotional material and hopefully an exhibition publication, plus support our invigilation expenses. This will benefit participating artists as it will allow for professional documentation of the show which we will share with all our exhibitors, and enable us to pay the creatives working with us a fair wage. However, we absolutely do not want this to be a barrier to artists applying, so please do get in contact if this causes an issue.
Are there payments to artists?
All work submitted can be made available to purchase if the artist wishes it.

The only commission fee we will take from the artists who sell work is the tiny 1.75% transactional fee iZettle charges for card payments. At the end of the show we will request bank details or PayPal emails from the artists who have sold work. Payment to artists for works sold during the exhibition will start to be processed after Sunday 12th March 2023. All artists will receive payment for sold work within two weeks of this date.
Is there a private view / opening?
Opening night private view: Saturday 4th March 6-9pm
With refreshments, possible live performances and pop-up shop open to sell works.
What are the exhibition opening hours?
Exhibition open: Sunday 5th – Friday 10th March 2023
The show will be open for six days, 12-6pm for the first five days, 10-2pm on Friday 10th. The pop-up shop will also be available and selling work during these opening hours.
What publicity will be provided as part of the opportunity?
We will be collaborating with Suffolk-based arts organisation The Art Station to riso-print our flyers and posters sustainably, with the possibility of later producing a printed publication documenting the show (funding-dependent). We also hope to gain some sponsorship from local food and drinks companies for the opening night, and work with regional media outlets and freelance creatives to promote/document the show.
