Error & Power - Artist Residency and Exhibition Opportunity
Residency: 20 April 2020 – 15 May 2020 
Exhibition: Online throughout the residency period and beyond. Physical exhibition dates to be confirmed

Given that we are now confined to our homes, we’ve decided to change the current Error & Power residency callout to a Residency at Home format so that we can continue to support artists in these difficult times.

Instead of being in residence at Artcore’s building the artists will work from their own space, improvising with whatever materials they have or can get hold of, or perhaps working with digital media, and broadcasting both live and recorded material as the work progresses – the broadcast material could potentiallty be the form or medium of the work, or both. 

We would like to retain the ‘Error & Power’ theme, though given what has happened over the last few weeks you might now interpret this very differently to how you might previously.

We are looking for two early career artists to take up Residency at Home opportunities with Artcore, responding to the title ‘Error & Power’.

The artistic strategy of creating space for chance, unintentional mistakes and errors to occur and to shape the artist’s work has a long history, and this residency is an opportunity for two artists to explore the relationship between their practice and error – deliberate or accidental. We particularly want to look at technological error – the glitch, the hack, the syntax error – in media arts practice and political activism, as a response to the pervasive power of technology, and its acts of control, regulation, prevention, its power to both  liberate and enslave its users, though we are open to proposals in any visual art medium.

The aim of the residency is to understand how error is used by artists, for what purposes, and with what outcomes, and its relationship to technological and political power, the characteristics of which are control regulation, prevention, and normalization.

We are offering each artist:

• An Artist bursary of £800 to produce work for exhibition on-line and, at some future point, at Artcore Gallery in Derby City Centre
• An Artist blog throughout the residency to share the progress of the work, or potentially to be the form/medium of the work
• A chance to deliver artist talks - live and recorded - online 
• Remote mentoring support throughout the residency
• A catalogue – both digital and physical
• Publicity and marketing support

Artists will work at home, documenting the creation of the work and broadcasting it through Artcore’s media channels.

We welcome applications from artists working in any visual arts discipline, and with a cross-disciplinary practice.

We expect artists to have a commitment to developing their practice, and to engaging in dialogue with Artcore and our audiences, and the wider international contemporary arts and cultural sector.

We welcome artists with an interest in how sharing online and virtual space and collaborative working can inform the development of their work.

Selection will be made on Friday 17 April.

Residency start date: 20 April

Residency end date: 22 May

Exhibition dates: 29 May – 13 June

About Artcore:

Artcore supports and promotes the work of contemporary artists and uses art to bring about positive changes to the lives of people of all ages, abilities and cultural backgrounds. Its main activities include exhibitions, residencies, screenings, talks and festivals alongside daily workshops for adults and young people.

Our Location:

Derby has a developing visual arts culture, with galleries at QUAD, Derby Museum & Art Gallery and at Artcore, a University with Undergraduate and Postgraduate courses in the School of Arts, and much DIY activity across the City. Artcore has hosted two annual Visual Arts Summits, and is the lead organisation in supporting the development of the visual arts ecology of Derby.

We have recently taken on a large City Centre space, and although this residency will be undertaken as a Residency at Home, our new Albert Street street building will at some future point be the venue for the exhibition, placing your work in a prominent new visual arts space right in the heart of Derby.
