    I am a multi-disciplinary artist, working in collage and assemblage art. In my work I examine the possibilities available when using found materials and appropriated images. I mix abstract shapes, redact, edit and censor the photographs and text to create new stories about form, negative and positive space, women, masks (real and imagined) and queerness.

    I’m a colour-blind artist/cartoonist fascinated by the overlooked moments of everyday life. The way people interact with their surroundings, both living and inanimate, in ways that are often unnoticed. My work explores the social, philosophical, and humorous aspects of these interactions, inviting viewers to pause and see the world through a fresh lens.

    My artistic practice centres on stained and painted glass, exploring light as material and metaphor. Combining traditional techniques with experimental surfaces, I create contemplative works focused on presence, energy, and human connection.     Trained, practiced and taught Graphic Design turned to Printmaking as a main practice since 2017. Concentrated on Linocut initially predominantly 'Reduction'. Recently returned to college for an Adult learning Printmaking course and introduced to Tetrapak, Drypoint, Aquatint and other Intaglio processes which has expanded my outlook on many other possibilities and approaches.

    I’ve been trying to get to the root of why I paint what I paint, after much ruminating I think I’ve realised the different avenues my mind travels down. I’ve become more interested recently in a still life aspect to my work, looking at old toys and discarded objects and it’s the stories about the past, that I can almost see- just out of reach and stories are the main diet of my imagination.

Layla's work was shortlisted for the Flourish Awards for excellence in Printmaking and selected for Ones to Watch, Yorkshire 2024. Layla was longlisted for World Illustration Awards 2023 and is on the Artist Inter_change program at Humber Street Gallery Hull.
